Elephant Orphanage. established in 1975, commenced with seven orphans. Today some of these orphans enjoy the fortune of seeing their grandchildren born in the same location. The original objective of establishing the orphanage inclined more towards tourism, but is soon became a conservation and educational centre. With the help of local and foreign elephant experts, Pinnawala started a scientific captive breeding programme for elephants. The free movement of the herd enhanced the chances for respective individuals of both sexes to get together and mate. The nearby river played a dominant role in this regard, and in 1984, the first baby of Pinnawala was born. The success story of Pinnawala has drawn the attention of scientists from all over the world. A considerable number of books and research articles on Pinnawala have been published in several languages. The members of the Pinnawala herd have been filmed, videoed and photographed thou sands of times by professionals. Sigiriya Lion Rock Fortress In the 5th century, King Kasyapa chose to build his new capital upon this rock. He built his palace at the top of the rock and decorated the sides with colorful frescoes. On a plateau halfway up, he built a gate, guarded by a statue of a lion. This gave rise to the name Lion Rock. You can still see the remains of the lion’s paws, although its head is long gone. After the death of King Kasyapa, the capital and royal palace were both abandoned, before being used as a Buddhist monastery up until the fourteenth century. It is now one of Sri Lanka’s seven UNESCO World Heritage sites and the most visited attraction in the country.

Visitors to the palace entered via a stone stairway that took them into the lion’s mouth and through its throat — hence Sigiriya’s alternative name, “Lion Rock.” Only the lion’s massive paws remain today, but they indicate how gigantic the rest of the carving must have been. A new stairway has been attached to the side of the rock to allow access to the summit, enabling visitors to stroll around the ruins of the palace and gasp at the panoramic views. Two water tanks, used for bathing and drinking, still fill with rain water, but in Kasyapa’s day a sophisticated pumping system was used to fill the tanks from a lake at the foot of the rock.

During a South Indian invasion the king had to abandon his Anuradhapura Kingdom . For 12 years, King Valagamba was in hiding and had frequented these caves for his safety. After regaining the kingdom of Anuradhapura and becoming the King, to show his gratefulness for his safe place, he converted those caves into Buddhist Temples by constructing walled partitions under the rock overhang which spans the entire area as a single large cave. He got drip ledges made along this large cave and made it suitable to withstand rainy weather and avoided water seeping inside the caved areas. The three cave temples named as Devarajalena, Maharajalena and the Paccimalena were constructed by him.
