Sigiriya

The ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya, is considered as the Eighth Wonder of the World. Sigiriya is a king’s palace built atop a massive rock, high in the sky.Being a UNESCO World Heritage Site Sigiriya draws visitors from across the world. According to the annals if history, the rebellious King Kashyapa (477-495AD) reigned from this mighty rock fortress. A protective iron bridge from the mirror wall area leads the visitor to an ancient flight of steps which in turn directs you to a terrace dominated by two massive lion’s paws. When you climb up to the summit of the rock you can witness ancient moats, ponds, walkways and ruins what once used to be regal gardens and courtyards. You can walk through the corridors that lead to the famed frescoes wall adorned with intricate arts of the concubines of the palace. Out of the original 500 paintings however only 21 have survived the test of time. There are stanzas of Graffiti on the wall which date from the 7th to the 13th century. Sigiriya features some of the greatest feats of architecture and construction engineering apart from converting the fortress in the sky to a veritable treasure trove of art. The water gardens on top of the rock are a series of ponds with stunning fountains and water system that during the monsoon functions perfectly even today. The sweeping views from the top are nothing short of beautiful. Little is known of Sigiriya’s importance as a Buddhist monastery as it used to be a monastery before as well as after King Kasyapa’s reign.
