Bandarawela

Nestled amidst fascinating mountain views, Bandarawela is a misty little town in the Badulla District. The town’s endless natural beauty and picture perfect views captivate the visitor. During the colonial era, Bandarawela used to be a favourite destination of the British colonisers. With swaying wild flowers, rolling tea hills, towering pine trees and swamps of wild greens, Badarawela conjures pictures straight out of a fairytale. Its soothing cool climes add to the charm of the town. Traverse through its winding paths to witness neat patches of vegetable plantations, terraced paddy fields, chocolate-box houses and Tudor-style colonial bungalows. In Bandarawela, you awake to the sound of cheerful birdsongs and stunning mist shrouded panoramas.

During the fruiting months, strawberry and pears gardens are a great place to visit. Although there are many viewpoints that afford breathtaking views of the lush scenery of the town, Porawagala is the most famous vantage point. You have to trek through shrubs and bushes to reach the viewpoint that offers a striking 360-degree panorama of the area. The Dhowa Rock Temple is hidden in the midst of the forestry of Bandarawela. The 2000-year-old temple is a protected heritage site with rock caves believed to have once provided sanctuary to King Walagamba. Inside the caves are intricate statues of Buddha. The ceiling of the caves are embellished with beautiful paintings inspired by the Kandyan-Era. Bandarawela is a great place to stay due to its close proximity to destinations such as Ella, Haputale and Nuwara Eliya.
