Kandy

Home to the revered Temple of the Tooth, Kandy is a resplendent city in the hill country and also a must visit destination in Sri Lanka with many historical accounts to explore. Each August, the city comes alive with the biggest cultural extravaganza of the island-the Kandy Esala Perahera. The majestic procession pays homage to Buddha and a regally caparisoned tusker carries the relics of the Great Teacher around the city. It is a beautiful cultural pageant where traditional dancers, drummers, acrobats, fire jugglers and whip crackers journeycity streets in a wave of brilliance, beckoning devotees in their thousands from island wide as well as visitors from across the world.

The serene Kandy Lake which is surrounded by a magnificent stylized wall, is an integral part of Kandy’s identity. Kandy exudes colonial elegance and is a town dotted with stately colonial structures such as St Paul’s Church andTrinity College Chapel. The Udawatta Kele Forest Reserve is the green lung of the city and it is said that the members of the Royal family had used the forest for recreational activities and the pond in the forest was used as one of their bathing venues. Known as Sri Lanka’s biggest botanical garden, Peradeniya Royal Botanical Garden is a delightful place in Kandy. Sprawling over 147 acres, the garden is home to more than 4000 species of plants and 300 species of orchids. You can also climb to the top of the Bahirawakanda to see the immaculate white statue of the Buddha that is 88ft in height.
